Help keep your children safe while using the Internet!
Here are some guidelines for family Internet use.
*Make computer use a family activity. Spending time online with your child
allows you to learn about internet skills and good online manners and conduct.
Provide guidance and assume responsibility for your child's use of the internet.
Guidelines should include time of day, amount of time allowed online and
appropriate sites to visit.
*Get to know your child's online and other friends. Ask questions about where
and whom your child is hanging out with on the Internet. Know your child's
favorite sites, talk about them. If a site offends you, talk with your child and
explain why you believe the site is inappropriate.
*If you can't be with your child every time they use the internet, set some
rules for being online alone, just as you would if they were outside the home.
For example, do not talk to strangers. Talk to your child about online safety
and the rules that you have set.
*Supervise older as well as younger children who use the Internet at home and at
the library.
*Set up your computer in a family room where it is visible. Children who are
left unsupervised can be exposed to information or images that are inappropriate
or disturbing,
*Encourage your child to use sites recommended on your library's children's home
page. Teach them to consider the source, date and accuracy of the information
and that not everything on the Internet is true.
*If your child is having a problem with the Internet, work together to solve it
and prevent further issues.
*If your child asks to have a face-to-face meeting with an online friend, decide
if the meeting should occur. If you agree to the meeting, make the first one in
a public place and accompany your child.
*Some sites may try to sell them something. Encourage your children to talk to
you before they purchase anything online.
