Hopkins County -
Madisonville Public Library, Dawson Springs Branch Library and the
Bookmobile are
pleased to offer free Wireless Internet Access for all patrons!
How can I use wireless internet access at the library?
Wireless access uses the Wi-Fi
standard (also known as IEEE 802.11B, G or Draft N). Most users can
simply bring their wireless-enabled laptop computer or other
wireless device to the Library and turn it on. The computer will
automatically detect the wireless network. If your laptop does not
have wireless built-in, you can install a Wi-Fi-compatible network
card. The Library cannot guarantee your equipment will work with the
Library's network.
How does it work?
Wireless access points
are located in the library. You should be able to connect almost
anywhere in the building. When your wireless network card senses a
signal, a message appears on your screen indicating a wireless
network is available. When you open your web browser internet
service will be active on your device.
Can library staff help me configure my computer?
Library staff may not configure individual
devices. We do offer a simple guide to help assist users with
connection, however we are not responsible for any changes that
users may need to make to their software compatible with the
wireless.
Will I need a password to connect?
No, the wireless does not require any username,
password or encryption settings.
Is my information safe while using wireless?
Information is not
protected while using wireless. Keep this in mind if you are
accessing sensitive business or personal information. Another
wireless device with appropriate software may be able to intercept
your data if it is within range. Also devices should have up-to-date
anti-virus software installed as the Library is not responsible for
damage to software, hardware or files on devices that connect to the
wireless network.
Are there any restrictions on wireless internet use?
Due to bandwidth limitations, online games and
chat rooms are not permitted on our wireless internet. Wireless
users must agree to abide by the
PINA and Wireless Access Policies
which regulate
Library Internet access. The library also reserves the right to
restrict downloading if this slows down internet service for other
patrons.
Can I access the Library's electronic databases over the
wireless?
YES!!! Just go to
www.publiclibrary.org
and click on Electronic Databases. All of the databases can be
accessed across the wireless internet, including Ancestry Library
Edition. For more information about these resources please speak to
Library staff.
Can I print through the wireless network?
It may be possible for your Windows Vista enabled
laptop to automatically detect our Xerox network printing system.
All other operating systems will not be able to print. If you need
to print please send your item to an email account then log in to
one of our wired internet computers to print. Users of the library's
public laptops will be able to print from the laptop to the Xerox
machine in the main internet room.
ALL
